ACE is generally known to lean towards realism, with "realistic" armor types and a large variety of shell types. ACE used to have AP ammo be split up into AP, APC, APBC, APCBC. But these were later all merged because "they all served the same purpose". Unfortunately this just ignores the problem at hand. The reason these rounds all performed the same is because ACE lacks a core fundamental of armor penetration mechanics. The loss of penetration against angled armor. While i suggested this once before and it fell upon deaf ears, here's my suggestion.
When a projectile hits an angled armor plate, currently in ACE, every shell treats it the same way, it keeps all of its pen and just goes with LOS armor values. But in real life (and DakTank), when a shell impacts an angled plate, this causes it to deflect away from the plate (except apfsds, or chemical warheads) which forces it to pass through more material and thereby reducing its penetrative power.
By adding a mechanic that checks the angle of impact against an armor plate by a shell and then reducing the shells total penetration by a set Percentage based on the angle of impact. You can justify the return of AP ammo types, and also have a more realistic experience when using traditional ammo, and also would allow APCR to become viable because currently APCR is undeniably the worst ammo type in the entire game.
Here are examples and estimates for how shell performance would be affected by angles.
